If you live in St Helens, Burnie, or Hobart, knowing how to maintain your trailer in coastal areas is essential to stop the salt air from destroying your gear. The most effective maintenance tip is the freshwater rinse. Every time you take the trailer near the coast (or even just out in the rain), hose down the entire chassis, including inside the box and under the wheel arches.
Apply a lanolin based spray or a fish oil to the leaf springs and any exposed bolts. These products create a waxy barrier that salt cannot penetrate. Check your electrical connections monthly and apply a bit of dielectric grease to the terminals to prevent that green “crust” that causes lights to fail.
