Deciding between a single axle vs tandem trailer which is better Australia-wide depends entirely on how much weight you plan to move and how far you’re going. Both have their place in a Tassie driveway, but they serve very different masters.
Single Axle Trailers are the kings of manoeuvrability. They are easy to move by hand when unhooked, making them perfect for suburban homes with limited space. They are cheaper to register, cheaper to maintain (only two tires and sets of bearings), and perfectly adequate for loads up to 750kg ATM.
Tandem Trailers (Dual Axle) are built for the heavy lifters. With four wheels on the ground, they offer incredible stability at highway speeds, significantly reducing “swaying.” If a tire blows at 100km/h, a tandem trailer is much easier to control. They also allow for much higher weight capacities—often up to 2,000kg or more. If you’re hauling machinery, large amounts of gravel, or a full load of firewood, the tandem is the only way to go.
