The reason why galvanised trailers last longer in Tasmania is due to our unique “Roaring Forties” weather patterns that dump salt spray across the entire island. Unlike paint, which sits on top of the metal, hot dipped galvanizing is a chemical bond where the steel is submerged in molten zinc at 450 degrees celsius.
This process coats the inside of the hollow chassis rails the exact place where painted trailers start to rot from the inside out. In a state where it rains frequently and the air is constantly salty, a galvanized trailer can easily last 20+ years, whereas a painted “budget” trailer might show structural rust in as little as three to five years.
